Dev Log #3: Customized 3D Models
As I’ve already announced, I’m creating custom 3D models for Afterlife: In the Shadows, starting with Seb’s apartment, and then moving onto Kira’s apartment before tackling the rest of the maps. Seb’s apartment is steadily taking shape as development progresses, with new custom models helping bring the space to life. I’m taking my time with the modeling and layout to make sure his apartment feels natural, distinctive and personal, shaped by Seb’s unique personality and tastes.
As for the city map, I’m also aiming to create custom buildings—including interior spaces for story-relevant shops—rather than relying solely on the excellent City Assets from SmileBoom (although I may still use them where appropriate). The goal here is to make the city feel more unique and modern, drawing inspiration from real-life shops and locations I’m familiar with to give it a grounded, authentic vibe.
Although Afterlfe is being developed as a visual novel-style story, the assets and models I’m creating now are being designed with flexibility in mind—they can be ported to other projects I have planned within the Tales of the Otherworld universe, including Through the Veil, which I began developing some time ago.
One Idea I’ve been exploring for more game-exclusive content is stylizing and modifying SGB G-Style vehicles, scaling them down into miniature model decorations for the apartment. It’s a small detail, but in my opinion adds a bit of charm and variety to the space, making it feel more curated and real.

If you’ve been following me on social media—notably on X—you’ll have seen some of the models I’ve already shared as progress continues. However, I’m considering adding a dedicated section for screenshots on Afterlife's blog section, as well as here on Itch.io, and possibly on GameJolt in the future.
Overall, these updates are part of my ongoing effort to build a more detailed, personalized world for Afterlife: In the Shadows. From environments to small decorative touches, every element is being created to strengthen the game’s storytelling and atmosphere. And I’m pleased with the direction it’s heading in.
